The Challenge

A friend wanted to create an EP that told the story of a prehistoric tribe through five interconnected chapters. The vision was cinematic yet visceral—not a traditional soundtrack, but a hybrid between modern jazz harmony and raw, ancient percussion.

The Process

We recorded at Abbey Road Institute Amsterdam with an approach that was completely unorthodox. Instead of building layers methodically, we recorded everything live and in a chaotic way:

  • Over 200 tracks of recorded percussion (hand drums, earth sounds, scraped materials)
  • Brass sections with extended techniques
  • Vocal textures and shouting (treated and layered)
  • Modern synthesizers blended with traditional instruments

The mixing phase became about finding clarity within chaos—respecting the raw energy while making each element audible and purposeful.

The Result

Each track became its own chapter. The first track, “The Hunt,” opens with departure, builds through pursuit, sustains the vigil, and ends in celebration. The entire EP maintains this emotional honesty: survival and reverence coexist.

The artist felt the final mix captured exactly what they imagined—raw, energetic, and deeply intentional.
